English Grammar – present continuous

The present continuous is used to talk about present situations which we see as short-term or temporary or to talk about trends. We use the present simple to talk about present situations which we see as long-term or permanent.

In these examples, the action is taking place at the time of speaking.

  • It’s raining.
  • Who is Kate talking to on the phone?
  • Look, somebody is trying to steal that man’s wallet.
  • I’m not looking. My eyes are closed tightly.

In these examples, the action is true at the present time but we don’t think it will be true in the long term.

  • I’m looking for a new apartment.
  • He’s thinking about leaving his job.
  • They’re considering making an appeal against the judgment.
  • Are you getting enough sleep?

In these examples, we are talking about trends.

  • Pollution is getting worse

  • The economy in China is growing fast.

  • My company is expanding fast

“My company is expanding fast” is not correct grammar. It should read, “My company is expanding quickly.”

“Fast” is an adjective; “quickly” is an adverb.

Fast is both an adjective and an irregular adverb (ie. it is not formed with the usual -ly ending) One can therefore say: My company is growing fast – and – It is a fast-growing company.

He drove fast (often we say “too fast”)(adverb)
The Ferrari is a fast car.(adjective)

I greatly enjoy the free English lessons offered with so much generosity by Pearson.
As a non-native teacher of English I often encounter difficulties trying to make my students seize the difference between simple present tense and present progressive, and most generally between simple and continuous aspect.
While extensive grammar teaching may do a lot in clarifying points that are not that “simple” for non-native learners, exercises help us better understand and strenghten our theoretical knowledge. As we all know only intensive practice can lead us from general and abstract knowledge of English to the successful and correct use of it.

So thank you a lot Mr. Brown!
P.S. I’ve also found comments from certain participants equally interesting.

Is it true that FAST only functions as an adjective? If we check OXFORD ADVANCED Dictionary, we’ll see that it has two functions. As an adjective and a verb. Please, write your comment/s.

@Sigit I think you can trust the Oxford dictionary ;-) “Fast” can be a verb.

Sir/Madam,
It is very useful for a beginner in English. Why can’t you start a ‘Question(query)-Answer’ type column for those who have genuine doubts about English Grammar?
For example, I have genuine doubt about using noun POLICE as PLURAL while similar collective nouns like ARMY,NAVY etc are used as SINGULAR?

@SureshKumar In British English, “army” and “navy ” can be used as plural. It all depends if you think about an organisation (singular) or a group of people (plural). In American English, these are always singular.

I can set up a Q/A column very easily. The problem is paying for my time. Are you prepared to subscribe to it?
