English Grammar – present continuous
The present continuous is used to talk about present situations which we see as short-term or temporary or to talk about trends. We use the present simple to talk about present situations which we see as long-term or permanent.
In these examples, the action is taking place at the time of speaking.
- It’s raining.
- Who is Kate talking to on the phone?
- Look, somebody is trying to steal that man’s wallet.
- I’m not looking. My eyes are closed tightly.
In these examples, the action is true at the present time but we don’t think it will be true in the long term.
- I’m looking for a new apartment.
- He’s thinking about leaving his job.
- They’re considering making an appeal against the judgment.
- Are you getting enough sleep?
In these examples, we are talking about trends.
Pollution is getting worse
The economy in China is growing fast.
My company is expanding fast

Thak You very much for everything You’we done for us. You are really GREAT.
dear sir
thaks for sending the grammare point it so good and usefull i am waiting for more reponse
“My company is expanding fast” is not correct grammar. It should read, “My company is expanding quickly.”
“Fast” is an adjective; “quickly” is an adverb.

thank’s….It’s really great!!!
Fast is both an adjective and an irregular adverb (ie. it is not formed with the usual -ly ending) One can therefore say: My company is growing fast – and – It is a fast-growing company.
He drove fast (often we say “too fast”)(adverb)
The Ferrari is a fast car.(adjective)

I am trying to study my Ph D. in UTEP (University of Texas in El Paso). I live in Mexico and I need to present the GRE and TOEFL tests. I am really enjoying this practices. Please, keep sending thisw good staff!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. It’s a great help for me to have some lessons for my students.
ITS VERY NICE AND INTERESTING AND VERY BENEFICIAL FOR US,
I greatly enjoy the free English lessons offered with so much generosity by Pearson.
As a non-native teacher of English I often encounter difficulties trying to make my students seize the difference between simple present tense and present progressive, and most generally between simple and continuous aspect.
While extensive grammar teaching may do a lot in clarifying points that are not that “simple” for non-native learners, exercises help us better understand and strenghten our theoretical knowledge. As we all know only intensive practice can lead us from general and abstract knowledge of English to the successful and correct use of it.
So thank you a lot Mr. Brown!
P.S. I’ve also found comments from certain participants equally interesting.
realy intrusted
thanx for sharing ur knowledge.its realy my pleasurable to have it
really that i great service to whom ,they have problems in english grammar and vocab.I often encounte difficulty in grammar of english.as a result of intensive practice of english we can get more knowledge and sufficient english experience .as we know English is emerging as a dominant language in the world.I frequently practice of english till my knowledeg being perfect in it.
This is really helpful for people who has never learned English before, would be nice to compare that to Preset Simple Tense, anyway well done and cannot wait for another lesson…

Dear Mr Brown,
Thank you for the free English lessons. Unfortenately the level of English is very easy.
Kind regards,

It’s funny how the people who complain about the lessons being “easy” are the ones who make loads of bad mistakes in English such as “Unfortenately”
We have hundreds of exercises online and the level varies a lot.

Is it true that FAST only functions as an adjective? If we check OXFORD ADVANCED Dictionary, we’ll see that it has two functions. As an adjective and a verb. Please, write your comment/s.
@Sigit I think you can trust the Oxford dictionary
“Fast” can be a verb.
I find this present continuous lesson very interesting on youtube.
Thank u Caroline!
these are very effective exercise, keep sending me these kind of exercise more and more……..
take care.
Sir/Madam,
It is very useful for a beginner in English. Why can’t you start a ‘Question(query)-Answer’ type column for those who have genuine doubts about English Grammar?
For example, I have genuine doubt about using noun POLICE as PLURAL while similar collective nouns like ARMY,NAVY etc are used as SINGULAR?
regards-Suresh Kumar
Thanks a lot for helping us to learn English in a free cost. We appreciate & encourage you.
thank you for your kindness for giving lots of your knowledge, I very hapy to receive these
thank you
@SureshKumar In British English, “army” and “navy ” can be used as plural. It all depends if you think about an organisation (singular) or a group of people (plural). In American English, these are always singular.
I can set up a Q/A column very easily. The problem is paying for my time. Are you prepared to subscribe to it?
Pearson
